Reflections On Homelessness and Nature

By Crissie McMullan. This recording is shared with permission from Reflections West. Original publication here.

In this episode of Reflections West, Crissie McMullan, the former executive director of Mountain Home Montana, considers the connection between homelessness and the environment. She notes the importance of a safe and healthy home environment for humans to live and feel alive. McMullan pairs her essay with a passage from "Tom Connor’s Gift," by David Allan Cates. It's a novel about one woman's retreat into wilderness and solitude, where she mourns the death of her husband. Like McMullan, Cates makes the connection between a healthy environment and a safe home, and the potential of both to heal the mind and body.

Crissie McMullan is the former Executive Director of Mountain Home Montana, a shelter and licensed mental health center for young mothers and their children.

Reflections West is a weekly radio program that presents the thoughts of writers and scholars on the American West. These thinkers pair their own thoughts with a passage from literature and history.
